Populus Secures Opportunity to Pilot Curb Management Solutions with NYC Department of Transportation Through Transit Tech Lab

Populus is proud to join the 2024 Transit Tech Lab class to partner with New York City to improve curb management.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - May 8, 2024Populus, a leading provider of mobility and curb management solutions, is proud to announce its selection through the Transit Tech Lab to participate in a groundbreaking proof of concept with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) aimed at revolutionizing curb management. The proof of concept is part of NYC DOT’s Smart Curbs pilot program, which will focus on reimagining the use of curb space, beginning on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

As part of this innovative initiative, Populus will leverage its cutting-edge digital curb management software to collect, translate, and digitize curb and parking regulations, creating a comprehensive digital inventory for the city. This inventory will empower NYCDOT with crucial insights to develop a more informed perspective on the available curb space, update it for new use cases (such as delivery), and leverage this data to improve curbside efficiency and safety.

Regina Clewlow, CEO of Populus, expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “At Populus, we are dedicated to empowering cities with the tools they need to optimize urban mobility and create vibrant, accessible streets for all. We are thrilled to partner with the New York City Department of Transportation to enhance curb management in one of the world's most dynamic cities.”

This work will build on Populus recent work in the City of Hoboken, where the Populus Curb Manager platform is being leveraged to digitize and analyze curb regulations, integrate diverse real-time parking data, and more actively manage curbside demand and revenue. A cornerstone of the partnership in Hoboken involves coding the city’s curbs — that is, creating a database of curb and parking regulations using data standards so they can be digitally communicated to connected fleets and more quickly transform curbside management with smart, integrated solutions.

In New York City, NYC DOT will study Populus’s suite of curb management technologies over an eight-week “proof of concept” period. During this period of time, Populus and the NYC DOT will explore how these solutions can modernize how the City currently approaches curb management strategies. With more robust data and digital tooling, Populus envisions a future for New York City streets that is safer, more equitable, and more sustainable.
