Populus and Budapest Partner for Enhanced Shared Bike and E-Scooter Management

Budapest will leverage Populus Mobility Manager, which empowers cities to efficiently manage bikes, scooters, and other shared mobility services through access to better data.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA 31 January, 2024Populus, the global-leader for cities to manage transportation and mobility services, today announced Budapest’s selection of its robust mobility management platform to revolutionize the oversight of shared mobility services in the capital city. This decision from the transport authority, Budapest Kozlekedesi Kozpont (BKK), comes after an extensive evaluation, ultimately identifying Populus Mobility Manager as the optimal solution for Budapest's needs.

In response to the growing popularity of shared mobility services in the capital, BKK recognized the need for effective regulation and management. The surge of residents and visitors shifting in part from private car usage to shared bikes and scooters supports the city’s ambitious sustainability goals, however, it has also led to challenges associated with inappropriate parking and disorderly placement within public spaces.

Under the agreement, Populus will provide Budapest with access to its secure Mobility Manager platform to optimize the city’s transportation networks - reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents and visitors. After a rigorous competitive procurement process, Mobility Manager emerged as the top choice for addressing the parking and enforcement challenges faced by Budapest in managing shared mobility services for the year 2024.

Budapest will gain the ability to validate vehicle data, monitor real-time vehicle movements, create, communicate, and track compliance with parking policies, and analyze how and where bikes and scooters are being used within the City. The platform will also enable BKK to regulate vehicle parking and enforce the proper placement of devices within geographically defined mobility hubs.

"We are excited to collaborate with BKK in enhancing the oversight of shared mobility services in Budapest," said Regina Clewlow, CEO and Co-Founder at Populus. "Mobility Manager is designed to address the evolving needs of cities in managing the complexities of shared transportation, and we look forward to empowering Budapest with the data and technology necessary to create a more organized, safe, and efficient mobility ecosystem."

Populus has a track record of success, partnering with over 100 cities across Europe and North America. The data-driven approach to transportation planning and management has made Populus an essential tool for cities aiming to leverage technology for sustainable urban mobility.

“BKK is working towards creating a network of parking spots for shared scooters in the city, which helps us keep the sidewalks tidy and accessible for pedestrians and fosters the use of micromibility.” said Bendegúz Kovács, Spokesperson of BKK. “We are happy to cooperate with a partner whose innovative technology helps us enhance transportation planning and contributes to the city's long-term vision of Budapest becoming a sustainable, livable capital with a well-managed and seamlessly integrated shared mobility network."
